White Plume Mountain

General: Rising near the center of the Barrier Peaks and surrounded by the Witchwood, White Plume Mountain is a massive, dormant volcano. At one time it was likely comparable in size to the highest peaks of the Devil’s Spine Mountains, but now, after its ancient eruption, it is ‘merely’ the largest of the mountains in the Barrier Peaks.

The slopes of White Plume Mountain, and a small parcel of land around its base, are dotted with the skeletal remains of animals, long-dead trees, and small pools of highly acidic water. A small, nameless river runs down from its headwaters somewhere in the Barrier Peaks, along the base of White Plume Mountain before fracturing and emptying into the deep, sucking pools of the Bramblewood Marsh. Due to its proximity to the volcano, the river gives off a very distinct odor of rotten eggs, but is otherwise ‘safe to drink.’

Creatures: Despite being dormant, the almost constant release of pent-up, volcanic gasses means that the surrounding landscape is unusually devoid of living creatures. Some of the stranger (and more tenacious) denizens of the Barrier Peaks can be encountered here, but the environment around White Plume Mountain is unusually void of life. Explorers brave enough to venture to the volcano do report of oozes and deadly plants and fungi living within the caves that pincushion the sides of the mountain.
